PRESS RELEASE: The Center’s Health Equity Program Releases Final Report in Series Highlighting Action Steps for Integrating Equity into HTA

Alexandria, VA – September 4, 2024 – The Center for Innovation & Value Research (the Center) a non-profit research organization committed to advancing the science, practice, and use of health technology assessment (HTA) in healthcare, today released a new report, “Fulfilling the Promise of Equity in Value-Based Care: A Focus on Communications and Use in HTA.” This report is the third, and final, report in a series highlighting actions stakeholders can take to ensure that health disparities and equity are addressed in health technology assessment (HTA).

“Our goal is to fundamentally transform the landscape of health technology assessment to reflect the diverse needs of patients better and ensure equity is at the forefront of every decision,” said Jason Spangler, CEO of the Center. “By addressing the key domains of Power, People, and Processes; Data & Inputs and Methods; and Communications and Use, we aim to create a more inclusive and equitable healthcare system.”

After intensive dialogue over the past two years with more than 40 stakeholders representing patients, caregivers, researchers, payers, industry, and employers, the Center identified four key domains impacting the ability to incorporate equity in HTA: Power, People, and Processes (Report #1);Data & Inputs and Methods (Report #2); and Communications and Use (Report #3).

The third report, “Fulfilling the Promise of Equity in Value-Based Care: A Focus on Communications and Use in HTA,” focuses on the two domains, Communications & Use, and identifies tailored action steps for key stakeholders who shape HTA.

These steps include:

  • Transparent communication throughout HTA conduct, reporting, and use.
  • Making sure patients and decision-makers can understand and use HTA findings.
  • Make certain HTA Practitioners discuss what is known and unknown about how health technology impacts different groups of patients.
  • Ensuring HTA is part of a holistic and inclusive process for making healthcare decisions.
