Alexandria, VA – May 2, 2024 – The Innovation and Value Initiative (IVI), a non-profit research organization committed to advancing the science, practice, and use of health technology assessment in healthcare, today announced the launch of Phase II of its Patient-Centered Economic Impacts Project, “Uncovering The True Cost Of Healthcare.” This project aims to engage patients and caregivers to identify economic impacts beyond direct medical costs, and empower researchers, value assessors, and decision-makers to comprehensively address a broader range of economic challenges that patients experience.
Phase I of the project culminated in, “A Research Framework to Understand the Full Range of Economic Impacts on Patients and Caregivers” which provides guidance for researchers, funders, and decision-makers to consider what economic impacts are essential to consider in research design. This second phase of work aims to engage patients, caregivers, researchers, and other stakeholders in a series of interactive workshops. Each workshop will focus on a particular topic and stakeholders will applythe framework in designing patient-centered studies, explore best practices for patient engagement, and build the capacity to incorporate patient-centered economic impacts in comparative effectiveness research (CER).
IVI has formed a Steering Committee of patients, caregivers, researchers, and other stakeholders to provide insights and recommendations as the program progresses.

Estomin Malfesi, MSHS, Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation; Mary Reed, DrPH, Kaiser Permanente; Silke Schoch, MA, National Health Council; and Kevin Wake, CMR, CHW, MS, Uriel E. Owens Sickle Cell Disease Association of the Midwest.
“This two-year capacity-building project represents a significant step forward in fostering patient-centered healthcare,” said Jason Spangler, MD, MPH, FACPM, Chief Executive Officer of IVI. “By broadening our perspective to address economic challenges faced by patients and caregivers such as co-payments, transportation costs, job impacts, and caregiver burden, we aim to provide a more comprehensive understanding of patient-centered outcomes. If we prioritize the economic realities of patients and caregivers that are often overlooked, we can truly advance patient-centered care.”
