Health Care Organization Releases Summit Proceedings for Elevating Patient Perspective in Research and Value Assessment
Alexandria, VA — March 22, 2022 — The Innovation and Value Initiative (IVI), an independent, nonprofit research organization dedicated to advancing patient-centric value assessment, today announced the release of proceedings from the second annual Methods Summit, Designing Equitable Measures and Methods for Patient Priorities in Healthcare Value Assessment.
The event, held virtually over three days in October and November 2021, convened more than 170 stakeholders to drive consensus on priority patient inputs, methods, and research that more fully represent the patient perspective in comparative effectiveness research and economic evaluations of health care interventions.
The proceedings report and key principles offer guidance and specific steps stakeholders can take to incorporate patient and family perspectives into health care decision-making.
As part of the 2021 Methods Summit, stakeholders heard directly from patients on the challenges they face in managing their health and making decisions about their care. Patient leaders shared the burden placed on patient communities to capture and report data on patient experience and preference. And leaders from the payer and research community reflected the critical need to collect data on the full range of outcomes for patients and caregivers, as well as the need to modernize methods to incorporate such data.
Jennifer Bright, IVI’s Chief Executive Officer, reflected on the discussions that emerged from the three-day event, “Patient experience has to be acknowledged. We need to ensure that the patient community is at the table from the start so that research is designed with patients in mind and with patients at the driver’s seat. We need to not only value that expertise, but we need to make sure we’re thinking about compensating the patient communities appropriately.”
IVI will share the key principles and outcomes of the Methods Summit through a webinar, hosted in partnership with Network for Excellence in Health Innovation (NEHI), on March 24, 2022. Register here.
Looking forward, IVI will collaborate with stakeholders and develop an action agenda that puts key principles identified during the Summit into practice.
This project, Designing Equitable Measures for Patient Priorities in Healthcare Value Assessment, is partially funded through a Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) Eugene Washington PCORI Engagement Award (#EAIN-21156).
